A data center is a building full of powerful computers (servers) that store the internet's information and do its computing — everything your phone and laptop are too small to do themselves.
What's physically inside
- Servers, by the thousand — stacked in racks, running the apps, websites and AI models you use.
- Storage — the photos, videos, documents and databases of the digital world live on drives here, usually copied several times for safety.
- Networking — fibre-optic cables connect the servers to each other and to the outside world at enormous speed.
- Power systems — substations, batteries and generators so the computers never lose electricity, even in a blackout.
- Cooling — nearly every watt a server uses becomes heat, so a huge share of the building exists just to remove it.
- Security — fences, guards, cameras and access controls; your data is worth protecting.
