- Reliability needs engineering. Services that must never go down need redundant power, cooling and copies of data — affordable only at building scale.
- Speed needs proximity. Data centers sit near population centres so your clicks come back in milliseconds.
- Safety needs copies. Your data is stored multiple times in multiple buildings, so one fire or flood loses nothing.
Why so many are being built right now
Three waves stacked on top of each other:
- Cloud migration — companies keep moving computing out of their own server rooms into professional facilities.
- Video and data growth — streaming, gaming and ever-bigger files need ever-more storage and delivery capacity.
- AI — the big one. Training and serving AI needs a new class of GPU-dense facility, and the IEA projects data centre electricity demand will more than double by 2030 largely because of it.

The honest trade: data centers bring construction activity, permanent skilled jobs and a large property-tax base, while demanding real electricity, land and — for evaporative designs — water.
